Both of these images are from Islamic origin. The darker image on the left comes from a painting by Jorge Pardo, in 1981. The book is called "50 Texas Artists" published by Chronicle Books in 1986. The brighter image on the right side is in the book "Gnomon" by Midhat J. Gazale. The book is published by Princeton University press. These design, which can be formed from congruent equilateral triangles, are known as a polyiamond. Jay Kappraff shows a similar design in the book "Connections" (Figure 5.40 on page 203). The book "Connections" was published by McGraw Hill in 1990.
